Flashcards in Chapter 4-6 Deck (28):
1

What is Matter?

Any material that occupies space and has mass

2

What are properties?

Characteristics used to describe matter

3

what is homogeneous?

Homogeneous is when everypart of a material is the same and has only one set of properties

4

What is heterogeneous?

heterogeneuous is made up of parts or mixed and has at least two different properties

5

What are mechanical mixtures?

Mechanical Mixtures; the differnt parts of this kind of mixture can be easily identified, these mixtures are heterogeneous.

6

what are solutions?

Solution;different parts of this mixture are not seen with the unaided eye, these are homogeneous mixtures

7

what are pure substances?

Pure substances; a material that is compressed of only one type of particle

8

What are mixtures?

Mixtures are a material made up of several different types of materials;in a mixture, each material retains it's own properties

9

What is the particle theory?

A scientific model of the structure of matter; according to the particle theory, all matter is made up of tiny particles, and each pure subastance has its own kind of particle, different from the particles of other pure substances. Particles attract each other and are always moving.

10

What is dissolving?

Forming a solution by mixing 2 or more materials

11

What is a solute?

A solute is the substance that dissolves into a solvent to form a solution

12

What is a solvent?

A solvent is the substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution

13

What is soluable?

To be able to disolved into a particulart solvent

14

What is insoluable?

To not be able to dissolve into a particular solvent

15

What is the universal solvent?

Water has been called the universal solvent for its ability to dissolve so many materialas

16

What is hardwater?

Water that contains a lot of dissolved minerals

17

What is soft water?

Water with few dissolved minerals

18

What is distillation?

Distillation is a method for seperating the parts of a liquid solution by heating the liquid turning it into gass

19

What is desalination?

when removing the salt from salty water

20

What is settling?

Settling means that undissolved matter will, overtime, settle to the bottom of the container

21

What is unsaturated?

Unsaturated is a solution that will dissolve more solute at a givin temperature

22

What is saturated?

A solution that has dissolved as much as it can at a given temperature, at this point no amount of stirring can make more solute dissolve

23

What is supersaturated?

A solution that contains more solute than would normally dissolve at a given temperature

24

What is soluability?

The mass of a solute that csn dissolve in a given amount of solvent to form a saturated solution

25

What is rate of dissolving?

Rate of dissolving is a measure of how fast a solute dissolves in a solvent

26

Factors that affect the rate of dissolving are;

-Temperature
-Rate of stirring
-Surface Area

27

What is Floatation?

This method will seperate materials that are less dense than the liquid. The materials that rise to the top can be scooped out with a spoon

28

What are the methods of seperation?

-Floatation
-Distillation
-Tongs
-Settling
-Evaporation
-Magnetism
-Filtration
