Mental disorders
Exposure to a poison, injury to the brain
Physical factors
A person may inherit a tendency toward a disorder
Heredity
Extremely negative experiences that occur early in life such as child abuse or neglect
Early experiences
A death of a loved one for example
Recent experiences
A fear caused by a source you cannot identify or a source that doesn’t pose as much of a threat as you think
Anxiety
When anxiety persists for a long time and interferes with a daily living
Anxiety disorder
Intense worry, fears, or anxiety most days for at least 7 months
Generalized anxiety disorder
Anxiety that is related to a specific situation or object (fear)
Phobias
Could happen for no apparent reason with symptoms such as rapid heart rate, sweating, dizziness
Panic attacks
An unwanted thought or image that takes control of the mind
Obsession
An unreasonable need to behave in a certain way to prevent a feared outcome
Compulsion
Could be caused by witnessing or experiencing a life-threatening or traumatic event
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Trauma)
Experiences of extreme emotions that make it difficult to function in daily life (ex: bipolar disorder)
Mood disorder
An emotional state in which a person feels extremely sad and hopeless
Depression
One of the most serious disorders; it can be identified by severe disturbances in thinking, mood, awareness and behavior
Schizophrenia
Cannot resist the impulse or drive to act in a way that is harmful to themselves to themselves or others
Impulse control
Displays of rigid patterns of behaviors that make it difficult for them to get along with others
Personality disorders
A mental disorder with abnormal behaviors related to food
Eating disorder
Not eating enough food to maintain a healthy body weight
Anorexia nervosa
Uncontrolled eating binges followed by purging, or removing the food from their bodies
Bulimia
Uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food even if you are full
Binge eating
Mood disorder where people may feel sad and hopeless for months
Clinical depression
The use of sharp object to intentionally cut or scratch ones body deep enough to bleed
Cutting
