Chapter 4 - Acids & Redox Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are redox reactions?
When one substance is oxidised and another is reduced
What is reduction and oxidation in terms of oxidation numbers?
Reduction = decrease in oxidation number
Oxidation = increase in oxidation number
What reaction is always a redox reaction?
ACID + METAL -> SALT + HYDROGEN
What is a disproportionation reaction?
Specific type of redox reaction where species are simultaneously reduced and oxidised to form two different products
What side is the e- in a half equation?
LOSS of electrons = right side
GAIN of electrons = left side
How do you work out harder half equations?
- Work out the change in oxidation number for the element that is not oxygen or hydrogen
- Balance that element and add electrons
- Add water molecules to balance the oxygen
- Add hydrogen ions to balance the hydrogen
How do you calculate percentage uncertainty?
(Uncertainty/volume measured) x 100
What is an alkali?
Releases OH- ions in an aqueous solution
