Custom
The frequent repetition of an act, to the extent that it becomes characteristic of the group of people performing the act.
Alternative fact (alt fact)
A statement that can be proven to be false.
Habit
A repetitive act performed by a particular individual.
Global-local continuum
Concept that what happens at a global level effects the local level (and vice versa)
Cultural homogenization
The process of reduction in cultural diversity through the diffusion of popular culture.
Cultural appropriation
Process by which people adopt customs and knowledge from others to use.
Cyber espionage
The unauthorized and clandestine deployment of a virus to observe or destroy data in the computer systems of government agencies and large corporations.
Glocalization
The practice of conducting business according to local and global considerations.
Ethnic neighborhood
A neighborhood (in a big city) where a local culture practices customs.
Fake news
A false report disseminated under the guise of an authentic news report created to maliciously spread misinformation and mislead consumers of the content.
Franchise
An agreement between a corporation and business people to market that corporation’s products in a local area.
Taboo
A restriction on behavior imposed by a social custom.
Malware (malicious software)
Hostile or intrusive software designed to cause intentional harm.
Ransomware (cryptoviral extortion)
A form of malaware that encrypts the victim’s files, making them inaccessible, until a ransom is paid to decrypt them.
Terroir
The contribution of a location’s distinctive physical features to the way food tastes.
Trolling
The practice of posting deliberately inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in social media in order to provoke quarrels or otherwise agitate people.
Folk culture
Culture traditionally practiced by a small, homogenous, rural group living in relative isolation from other groups.
Colonialism
The practice or policy of control by one people over other people or areas by establishing colonies and aiming for economic dominance.
Creolization
The process in which creoles are formed.
Placelessness
The loss of a unique character of a place that looks like any other.
Cultural divergence
The tendency for culture to become increasingly dissimilar with the passage of time.
Cultural relativism
The belief that different cultured societies have no vantage point to examine other cultures based on the presumed equality of cultures.
Ethnocentrism
Judging another culture based on the values of one’s own culture.
Imperialism
The state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power by gaining direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas.
