Chapter 4 : Diagnostic Procedures & Therapeutic Interventions Flashcards
(33 cards)
List the vital signs.
- Temperature
- Pulse
- Respiration
- Blood Pressure
- Pain
Vital signs are essential indicators of health status.
What are the four basic examination procedures?
- Inspection
- Palpation
- Percussion
- Auscultation
These procedures are fundamental in a physical examination.
What does WNL stand for?
Within Normal Limits.
It describes laboratory or diagnostic test results that fall within the normal range.
What is Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)?
A system of codes that represent every service provided to a patient.
CPT codes are used for billing and insurance reimbursement.
What is the difference between signs and symptoms?
Signs are objective evidence of illness perceived by an examiner, such as fever or rash. Symptoms are subjective evidence as perceived by the patient, such as pain.
What is a symptom?
A change perceived by the patient, which may or may not be confirmed by the examiner.
What is a sign?
Objective, definitive evidence of an illness or disordered function perceived by an examiner.
What does diagnosis (Dx) mean?
The identification of a disease or condition by a scientific evaluation of physical signs, symptoms, history, tests, and procedures.
Define prognosis.
The predicted outcome of a disease.
What is the difference between acute and chronic diseases?
Acute diseases have a short and relatively severe course. Chronic diseases exist over a long time.
What is a specimen?
A small sample or part taken from the body to represent the nature of the whole.
What is the normal pulse rate in a resting state?
60 to 100 beats per minute.
What does respiration refer to?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the body or to breathing.
What is the normal respiration rate for teenagers and adults?
12 to 20 breaths per minute.
What is the abbreviation for temperature?
T
What is the function of a thermometer?
To measure temperature.
What are the three primary measurements included in vital signs?
Pulse rate, respiration rate, and body temperature
Blood pressure is sometimes included, but it is not strictly considered a vital sign.
What is blood pressure (BP)?
The pressure exerted by circulating blood on the walls of arteries and veins and on the chambers of the heart.
How is blood pressure indirectly measured?
With a stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff.
What unit of measurement is used for blood pressure?
Millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
What does the first number in a blood pressure reading represent?
Systolic pressure.
What does the second number in a blood pressure reading represent?
Diastolic pressure.
What is a normal blood pressure reading for a healthy adult?
Approximately 120/80 mm Hg.
True or False: Blood pressure is considered a vital sign.
True, but it is not strictly classified as one.
