How long does the embryonic period last?
Approximately from the third to the eighth week after conception.
How long does the germinal period last?
The first 2 weeks after conception.
How long does the fetal period last?
From the ninth week until birth.
Define implantation.
The process through which the zygote implants itself in the placenta on the wall of the uterus. Occurs about 10 days after conception.
What is an ultrasound?
An image of a fetus produced by using high frequency sound waves.
What is the age of viability?
The age at which a fetus might survive outside the womb, if doctors intervene. Usually about 22 weeks after conception is considered the viable age.
How long is the gestational period of humans?
About 9 months, or 40 weeks. Some books say 38 weeks, but it is common to measure from the first day of the first missed menstrual period.
What is the Apgar scale?
The scale with which doctors rate how healthy a baby is at birth. Ranges from 1 to 10. If the score is higher than 7, the baby is fine.
What is a cesarean section, or c-section?
It’s where the baby is removed through an incision in the mothers abdomen, instead of through the birth canal.
What is a doula?
A woman who helps with the birthing process.
What is a teratogen?
Agents and conditions, including viruses, drugs, and chemicals, that can impair prenatal growth and result in birth defects or even death.
What is a behavioral teratogen?
Agents and conditions that harm the prenatal brain, impairing the child’s intellectual and emotional functioning.
