Chapter 4- Protists Flashcards
(24 cards)
Protists
Any organism that is not a plant, an animal, a fungus, or a prokaryote.
Cilia
Used for feeding and movement
Amoeboid movement
The cytoplasm of the cell streams into the pseudopod and the rest of the cell follows
Food vacuole
Is a small cavity in the cytoplasm that temporary stores food
Pseudopods
Temporary projections of cytoplasm
Contractile vacuole
Controls the amount of water in the protist but removing it
Trichocysts
Are small, bottle shaped structures used for defends and get prey
Macronucleus
Is a “working library” of genetic information- a site for keeping copies of most genes the cells needs
Micronucleus
Contains a “reserve copy” of all of the cell’s genes
Gullet
An indentation in one side of the organism. The particles are trapped in the gullet and forced food into food vacuoles
Anal pore
Waste materials are emptied into the environment through the anal pore
Conjugation
Allows them to exchange genetic material with other individuals.
Pellicle
An intricate cell membrane
Euglenaphyta
Move with two flagella. Photosynthetic with chloroplasts. Eyespot to detect light. Pellicle. Store food as starch. Euglena. Asexual Fresh and salt water Primary producer
Baccilariophyta
Diatoms Photosynthesis with red and yellow pigments. Cell wall of silica (or pectin) Aquatic Store sugar as oil and use it to float Primary producer Asexual
Pyrrophyta
Dinoflagellates Marine Two flagella(one circling) P.s-chlorophyll, red and yellow pigment Some bioluminescent Cause red tide Asexual Cellulose( cell wall) Primary producer
Ciliophora
Ciliates- beating cilia Fast predators Pellicle (cell wall) Has trichocysts 2 nuclei Paramecium Heterotrophs Fresh and salt water Asexual sexual Primary consumer
Zoomastigina
Two flagella Heterotrophic Mostly parasitic Trypanosomes Fresh water and organisms Asexual Pellicle
Sarcodina
Pseudopods Marine have a shell of calcium carbonate Aquatic Heterotrophs Amoeba Asexual Jell-like ectoplasm Primary consumer
Sporozoa
Plasmodium No movement Heterotrophs Live in organisms sexual= spores, asexual Cell membrane Parasite
Oomycota
Water molds Flagalleded spores Heterotrophs Live in organisms, soil, fresh water Sexual= zoospores asexual Cellulose Decomposers
Acrasiomycota
slime molds Amoebiod Heterotrophs Live in soil Sexual= spores asexual Cell membrane Decomposer
Myxomycota
Net slime molds Flagalleded spores Heterotrophs Live in organisms, soil, dung Sexual= spores asexual Cellulose Decomposer
Phagocytosis
When organisms feed by engulfing organic matter within pseudopods
