Chapter 4 - Protocols Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a Three-way handshake?
A 3 step process where transport layer protocols establish a connection between nodes
What is a checksum?
Method of error checking, to see if arriving data matches data the receiving unit sent - String of characters that is sent to the destination then the designation generates a similar string, if they match, they are good
What is a Protocol Analyzer?
Software or hardware-based tool that can capture and analyze data on a network
What is a SYN?
What is an ACK?
What is ARP?
Address Resolution Protocol - At the data link layer - Works with IPv4 to discover the MAC address of a node on the local network & to maintain a data base that maps IPv4 addresses to MAC addresses
What is an ARP table?
Database of IP-to-MAC address mapping, usually stored on a computer’s hard disk
What are Dynamic ARP table entries?
When a client makes an ARP request for info that could not be satisfied by data already in the ARP table, but then updated after info is recorded
What are Static ARP table entries?
Those that have been entered manually using the ARP utility
What is NDP?
Neighbor Discovery Protocol - At the data link layer -
What is Ethernet II?
Current Ethernet standard, contains 2-byte type field
What is the LLC?
Logical Link Control - Upper portion of the Data Link layer - Identifies the type of message and handles multiplexing, flow and error control, and reliability
