Neutral
Not helping or supporting any side in a conflict.
Garrison
An outpost or a small portion of the army.
Blockade
An act or means of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering and leaving.
Guerrillas
A tactic of using hit and run and ambush techniques for war.
Loyalist
The people who remained loyal to Britain and didn’t want to separate or go to war.
Patriot
People who independence from Britain.
Privateers
Taking privately owned ships and turning them into battle ships.
Diplomat
An official representing a country in a foreign country.
George Washington
Was named commander if he continental army by the congress. Drove the British out of Boston. Eventually won the war. Top general of the army and a representative of Virginia in the continental congress.
Ethan Allen
Patriot in the war that got credit for taking fort Ticonderoga.
John Hancock
Patriot who was president of the continental congress. Very wealthy merchant. First to sign the deceleration of independence.
John Adams
Boston lawyer who represented the red coats at the Boston massacre trial. Patriot. Representative for Massachusetts in the continental congress.
Sam Adams
Leader of the Sons of Liberty and was part of the continental congress. Fiery patriot from Boston.
John Paul jones (b/a)
From Scotland he came and became the naval leader and was a huge role in the war because he was a brilliant naval fighter. Was admired by many. “ I have not yet begun to fight”
Thomas Jefferson (a)
Representative from Virginia in the congress, wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Benjamin franklin
Went to France to try and gain their help as allies in the war. Top diplomat, representative from Pennsylvania.
General Howe
British General who replaced general gage, wins the battle of New York, doesn’t follow plans and goes to take philly.

British General who fought in North America in the beginning of the war. Governor of Massachusetts
Republic
When people elect representatives to serve them in government.
Thomas Paine (b/a)
English writer author of common sense, encouraged Americans to join patriots.
Marquis de Lafayette (f)
Young, very wealthy French noble who financed his own army to fight with the Americans. Top aid of George Washington (right hand)
Lord Cornwallis (b)
British officer who got surrounded at Yorktown and basically lost the war. Experience British General.
George III (b)
King of Britain during the revolutionary war.
Nathan Hale (a)
Soldier in the continental army, went to Britain to get information (spy) and was caught and executed. “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” Was a school teacher.
