Suffrage
The right to vote in political events
Articles of confederation
The original constitution of the US ratified in 1781 which was replaced by the US constitution only one branch and power to the states. (weak) about 8 years
Ratification
The official way to confirm something, usually a vote
Land ordinance of 1785
Put the 1784 resolution in operation by providing a mechanism for selling and settling land encourages people to move west
Northwest ordinance of 1785
Sets a system of how a territory becomes a state.
Tariff
A tax or duty to be payed on a particular class of imports or goods
Inflation
A general Increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money
Depression
A long and severe recession In an economy and dejection unemployment rises
Shay’s rebellion
A rebellion of Massachusetts farmers caused by high inflation (changes to the articles of confederation)
Constitutional convention
A meeting held in 1777 to make changes to the articles of confederation
Virginia plan
A proposal by Virginia delegates for a bicameral legislative branch favors the large states
New Jersey plan
Proposed by New Jersey delegates to have one single legislative branch and equal number representatives favored small states
Great compromise
The agreement that the large and small states reached at the constitutional convention favored large states
3/5 compromise
The agreement of the north and south states that 3/5 of slaves would count in their population
Federalism
Belief that there should be one strong central government
Legislative branch
Part of the government that creates laws
Executive branch
The branch of the government responsible for enforcing laws and making sure they are followed
Judicial branch
The branch that includes civil and criminal courts that interpret the law
Checks and balances
Counter balancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated
Federalist
An advocate or supporter of federalism
Anti-federalist
Someone who thinks the states should have more power than the central government
Amendments
A change or addition to a legal document
Bill of rights
The first 10 amendments to the US constitution including freedom of speech , assembly… Ect.
Constitution
A body of fundamental principles or established precedents according to which state is to be governed sets the structure and framework of a government
