Flashcards in Chapter 4 Terms Deck (19):
1

Absorption

The process in which light or other electromagnetic radiation gives up its energy to an atom or molecule

2

Absorption-line Spectrum

A spectrum showing dark lines at some narrow color regions (wavelengths)

3

Atmosphereic Window

Wavelength band in which our atmosphere absorbs little radiation

4

Blackbody

An object that absorbs all radiation that falls upon it and it reflects no light

5

Conservation of Energy

Energy is never created or destroy, but it may change its form

6

Continous Spectrum

Spectrum with neither dark absorption nor bright emission line

7

Doppler Shift

The change of wavelentgh caused by the distance between two objects

8

Electromagnetic Radiaiton

General term for any king of electromagnetic wave

9

Electromagnetic Spectrum

Inlcudes radio, mircrowave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X rays, and gamma rays

10

Electromagnetic Wave

Visible light is an electromagnetic wave and the wavelength determines its color

11

Element

Substance such as hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and so on that cannot be broken down into a simple chemical substance

12

Emission

The production of light or more specific - Electromagnetic radiation by an atom or other object

13

Emission-Line Spectrum

A spectrum consisting of bright lines at certain wavelengths separated by dark regions in which there is no light

14

Energy Level

Any of the numerous orbitals that an electron can occupy in an atom or molecule

15

Excited

When electrons are not in their lowest energy level

16

Frequency

The number of times per second that a wave vibrates

17

Infrared

A wavelength longer than visible light but shorer than radio waves and we cannot see them, but can feel them

18

Light

Electromagnetic energy

19

Orbital

Description where a electrons possible location might be
