Chapter 46 bio Flashcards
(39 cards)
Digestion
Food is broken down into smaller molecules
What is Absorption?
ions, water and small molecules diffuse or are transported into the circulatory system
What is nutrient absorption?
the process of consuming and using food as nutrients
What is the order of Digestion? from first to last.
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats
What are the 5 organic nutrients?
Carbohydrates
proteins
Lipids
Nucleic acids
Vitamins
What are Carbohydrates?
carbon source, starchy plants
What are proteins?
Meat, builds muscle
What are lipids?
-Building blocks of cell membranes
-fatty meats
-insulator
-plant oils
What is nucleic acid?
-components can be synthesized from amino acids and sugar
what happens if you lack carbohydrates?
cause weakness in muscles and weight loss
what happens if lack of proteins?
muscle weakness
-weight loss
what happens if lack lipids?
hair loss, dry skin, weight loss, and hormone imbalance.
what happens if lack nucleic acid ?
no effects if not present
What is ingestion ?
food is taken into the body and moved into the digestive cavity
what is egestion ?
undigested materials and other wastes are passed from the body
What are the four essential nutrients?
Essential amino acids
Essential fatty acids
water-soluble vitamins
fat-soluble vitamins
minerals
what are examples of Essential amino acids?
leucine and tryptophan
what are examples of essential fatty acids ?
Linoleic acid, polyunsaturated
-Unsaturated fatty acids found primarily in plants
-Strict carnivores obtain them from fish or adipose tissue of birds and mammals
what happens if you lack essential fatty acids?
effects smooth muscle contractions
lack in what causes rickets and night blindness?
Vitamins A,D,E,K
What is intracellular digestion?
Found in sponges
Phagocytosis of small bits of food.
-single celled organisms
-hydrolytic enzymes are in ALL cells
-does not meet metabolic demands
slow digestion and absorption
What is Extracellular digestion?
Found in cnidarians and flatworms
-inferior of cells in protected by hydrolytic enzymes
-have GASTROVASCULAR cavity (single opening outside)
Large prey can be consumed
what is the alimentary canal?
digestive cavity where food enters an opening on one end and passes through the animal in one direction, as it is digested.
How are nutrients absorbed by the alimentary canal?
Nutrients must be absorbed by the epithelial cells lining alimentary canal
