Chapter 5 Flashcards
(33 cards)
Digestion
The pros ses of digesting food
Enzyme
A chemical that’s helps break down food
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction
Amylase
A type of enzyme
Maltose
A glucose kinda thing
Œsophages
The muscular tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach.
Peristalsis
Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
Fibre
A type of carbohydrate the body cannot digest
Stomach
An organ that is part of the digestive system
Organ
A part of the body that performs a specific function.
Small intestine
A long tube-like organ that connects the stomach and the large intestine
Liver
a large organ in the abdomen that performs many important bodily functions, including blood filtering
Bile
a fluid that is made and released by the liver and stored in the gallbladder
Pancreas
A glandular organ located in the abdomen
Large intestine
The long, tube-like organ that is connected to the small intestine at one end and the anus at the other
Faeces
waste matter remaining after food has been digested
Egestion
the act or process of discharging undigested or waste material from a cell or organism
Wright the five processes of digestion in order
Ingestion → Digestion → Absorption → Assimilation → Egestion.
What is meant by the term digestion
The process of breaking down food into substances the body can use for energy, tissue growth, and repair.
Why must we digest our food
Digestion is important for breaking down food into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair
What is the difference between physical and chemical digestion?
Physical digestion involves physically breaking down food substances into smaller particles to more efficiently undergo chemical digestion. The role of chemical digestion is to further degrade the molecular structure of the ingested compounds by digestive enzymes into a form that is absorbable into the bloodstream.
Are the teeth used for chemical or physical digestion
Physical digestion.
Name three type of teeth
Molars, incisors and premolars
Why do we need teeth
Teeth play an important role in eating, chewing and nutrition
