Culture
A system of shared ideas, rules, and meanings that influence how we look at the world and how we behave in relationships and express ourselves emotionally.
Characteristics of Culture (Social)
Shared by all members of the same cultural group
Characteristics of Culture (Adaptive)
Customs beliefs and practices change slowly, but can adapt to social environments and to biological and psychological needs of people

Ethnocentrism
The belief in the superiority of one’s own group and culture, combined with distain and contempt for other groups and cultures.
Minority
A group that is different from a majority of a population, as with religion, race, ethnic origin, age, gender.
Innate Human Nature
People are perceived as good, bad, or a combination
Destiny
fatalistic
Harmony
exist as a single entity
Mastery
to overcome forces of nature and put to good use for humankind
Individualistic
Interpersonal individual relationships with outsiders and less with family
Lineal
Exist through ordered positional succession Mother to Daughter, Father to Son
Collateral
Group goals, Focus on relationship with others over individual goals.
Competence
A set of Skills necessary to care for people of different cultures
Humility
Process that requires individuals continually engage in self-critique and self-reflection as lifelong learners and reflective practitioners.
Biomedical
Assumption that all events in life have cause and effect, the body can be observed and measured based on symptoms and causes.
Naturalistic
Seen in Native Americans, Asians, life is one aspect of human nature and illness is only a response to keep in balance (yin/yang theory) Energy forces within body. Cold foods eaten with fever and hot food eaten with cold.
Spirituality
Any behaviors that give meaning to life or provide strength to a patient.
Religion
A system of beliefs or practice worship.
Spiritual Distress
A response to an illness or health issue.
Stages of Grief
Denial and Isolation, Anger, Bargaining, Depression or Sadness, and Acceptance.
