Chapter 5 + 6 Flashcards
(53 cards)
Qualitative Piaget’s Theory
Children active construct their own worlds… building mental structures that adapts to their world
Schemes
Little package of information… the developing brain creates schemes .
Actions that organize knowledge
Assimilation
Schema —> new experience—> schema stays the same .
Nipple to the bottle to the nipple.
Children have a schema of what the nippple is like so when they feed with a bottle it seems the same.
Accommodation
Schema —> new experience —> schema changes
You think every motor vehicle is a car… someone tells you there’s more than a car… it changes as you say truck
Over time schemes change
1 st stage of Piaget’s theory
Sensorimotor (0-2)
Everyone goes through the stages in the same order
Timing is different, children can go through the stages at different times
What is the difference between the stages???
Qualitative
Emotions are influenced by ____ and _____
Nature and nurture
Primary emotions
Emotions that are present in humans and other animals and emerge early in life.
Examples are joy anger sadness and fear
Secondary emotions
Emotions that requires self awareness.
Examples are jealous and embarrassment
Stranger anxiety
An infants fear of strangers. This tends to appear during the second half of the first year of life
Separation protest
An infants distressed crying when the caregiver leaves
7-8 months
Temperament
Different behavioral styles emotions in the way of responding
Chess and Thomas
These psychiatrists identified three basic types of temperaments
What are Chess and Thomas 3 temperaments
Easy child
Difficult child
Slow to warm up child
Easy child
A child who is generally in a positive mood
quickly establish as regular routine
and adapt easily to new experience
Difficult child
A child who tends to react negatively and and cry’s frequently
engages in an irregular routine
and is slow to accept change
Slow to warm up child
A child who had a low activity level,
Is somewhat negative
Displays a low intensity of mood
Kagen
Inhibited children
React to many aspects of unfamiliar environments / objects with distress
Cultural differences between Canadian and Chinese
Behavioral inhabitation is more highly valued in China then in North America
Chinese children are more inhibited. The cultural differences in temperament are linked to the parents behavior and attitude
Canadian mothers of inhibited 2 yrld were less accepting of their infants teperaments
Criticism of Piagets Theory
He under estimated children’s abilities
Relayed on verbal information but kids can’t talk much
Sensorimotor stages
- Reflexes (schemes)
- Creates 1st Habits.. primary circular reactions (body)
- Secondary circular reactions ( behaviors due to action… objects)
- Coordination of secondary circular reactions ( combining activities)
- Tertiary circular reactions (exploring the outside world)
- Internalization of schemes (putting info into your brain)
Sensorimotor Stage 1
Reflexes 0-1 months
Preloaded schemes like the sucking reflex
Sensorimotor Stage 2
1st habits develop.. primary circular reactions
Repeating something with the original stimulus.
1-4 months
Meltzoff + Barton test
In the 2nd stage
Pacifier test group A and B
Group A got a rough paci and group B got a soft one.
Group A looked at the rough paci without knowing they sucked on that one
