Superior
Part of the body or any body part nearest to the head from a reference point.
Inferior
Part of body or nearest to the feet
The knee is superior to the foot and inferior to the pelvis
Lateral
Part of body that lie farther from the midline (side)
Medial
Part of body that lies closer to the midline (inner)
Proximal
Describes structures that are closer to the trunk
I.e the elbow is distal to the shoulder and proximal to the wrist / hand
Distal
Farther from the trunk or nearer to the free end of the extremity
I.e the elbow is distal to the shoulder and proximal to the wrist / hand
Superficial
Closer or on the skin
Superficial burn involves only the top layer of the skin, an abrasion is a superficial wound
Deep
Farther inside the body or tissue and away from the skin.
Deep laceration involves a cut deeper into the tissue,
Ventral
Refers to the belly side of the body, or anterior surface of the body
Anterior - front side of the body
Dorsal
Spinal side of the body or posterior (back surface) surface, including back of the hand
Palmar
Front surface of the hand
Plantar
Bottom of the foot
Apex
Plural (apices) is the tip of a structure
I.e. Apex of the heart is the bottom (inferior portion) of the ventricles in the left side of the chest
Flexion
Bending of a joint
Extension
Straitening of a joint
Adduction
Motion toward the midline
I.e. Bring arms towards the hip
Abduction
Motion away from the midline
I.e. lift arms up
Prone
Body position when lying face down
Supine
Body position when lying face up
Flower position
Sitting upright
