Chapter 5: Tissues Flashcards
(60 cards)
Composed of cells w/c form a continuous layer of sheet covering the body surface or linibg cavities w/in the body. They are compactly placed, bonded together by the intercellular cement for strength and often supported below by a basement membrane.
Epithelial tissues
Four major groups of tissues
- epithelial
- connective & supportive
- muscular or contractile
- nervous or conductile
Function: protection, absorption, sensation, secretionc excretion, surface transport
Epethelial tissues
A thin flattened cell resembling the tiles in a floor
Squamous cell
Cell that has a cube-like appearance
Cuboidal cell
Cells that resemble pillars
Columnar cell
Arrangement of cells: single layer of cells
Simple
Arrangement of cells: arranged in two or more distinct layers of varied cell shapes
Transitional
Arrangement of cells: arrangement of two or more distinct layers
Stratified
Arrangement of cells: two or more indistinct layers
Pseudostratified
Single layer of flat cells
Simple squamous epithelium
One layer of box-like cells
Simple cuboidal epithelium
A layer of columnar cells that adheres to another along their longitudinal or lateral surface
Simple columnar epithelium
Made up of two or more layers of flattened cells
Stratified squamous epithelium
Made up of several layers of columnar cells
Stratified columnar epithelium
Made up of several layers of cuboidal cells
Stratified cuboidal
Tissues that sere various binding and supportive functions
Connective and supportive tissues
Fibers that occur singly or in branching bundles. They yeild gelatin after boiling and are easily digested by gastric juices
White or collagenous fibers
Fibers that are refractile and bigger than collagenous fibers. They occur singly or in sheets. They are made up of elastin and can be stretched easily.
Elastic fiber
Fibers that resemble white or collagenous fibers an yeilds reticulin on boiling.
Reticular fibers
Represents a stage in development of connective tissues. Consists of cells and a primitive intercellular ground substance
Embryonic tissue
Adult connective tissu that had strong flexible fibers of the collagen protein interwoven with fine, elastic and reticular fibers
Loose connective tissue
A type of loose connective tisue that consists of large cells that store lipid
Adipose tissue
Adult connective tisue that has more fibers than cells
Fibrous connective tissue
