Chapter 6: Integumentary System Flashcards
(23 cards)
A delicate cell membrane (invertebrate integument)
Protozoans
Invertebrate integument in the form of a single layer of cells
Coelenterates, flat worms and slugs
Invertebrate integument - the epidermis secretes a protective skeleton or shell
Insects, snails and crustaceans
Invertebrate integument consists of a single layer of epidermis which secretes a complex cuticle
Arthropods
Functions of vertebrate integuments
Protects Maintain constant internal environment Regulates elimination of heat Sense organ Covering
Outer, thinner layer of the skin
Epidermis (scarf)
Inner, thicker layer of the skin
Dermis (corium or cutis vera)
What kind of epithelium is the epidermis composed of?
Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium
Layers of the epidermis
Stratum corneum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum germinativum
Outer layer pf the epidermis. Cells in this layer are continually shed off by molting.
Stratum corneum
Only present in the very thickened surfaces of the skin like the soles and palms
Stratum lucidum
The middle layer where the epithelial cells die and become keratinized
Stratum granulosum
Adjacent to the dermis and contains epidermal cells that undergo frequent cell division that gives rise to cells in the preceding layers
Stratum germinativum
Composed largely of connective tissues and is made up of 2 layers
Dermis
Layers of the dermis
Stratum spongiosum
Stratum compactum
Borders the epidermis. Made up of loose connective tissues, glands and chromatophores or pigment cells
Stratum spongiosum
Made up of more compact connective tissues, nerves, blood vessels, and tactile corpuscles
Stratum compactum
Different nerve endings found in the dermis
Pacinian corpuscles
Krause’s end bulb
End bulbs of Ruffini
Free nerve endings
SNE for pressure
Pacinian corpuscles
SNE for cold sensation
Krause’s end bulb
SNE for heat sensation
End bulbs of Ruffini
SNE for pain sensation
Free nerve endings
Consists of the skin and its derivatives, the hair and nails. Major function is to protect the internal body parts.
