Chapter 5 Ventilation Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does “Type A” appliance mean?
Flueless
Take combustion air from the room, release POC into the room.
Give examples of Type B appliances
Open flue Boiler, open flue fire.
Where the appliance takes combustion air from room and release POC via a flue or chimney.
Which type of appliance is a modern room sealed boiler? (A B or C?)
Type C
Takes combustion air from outside via flue, releases POC outside via flue.
The appliance has a data badge which states its heat input is 22 KW, what is the net heat input of this appliance?
22 / 1.1 - 20 KW Net
Where purpose-provide ventilation is required for a gas appliance, it shall be provided by air vents which:
- Rigid.
- Not closeable
- No fly-screen
- No openings narrower than 5mm.
An air vent has a width of 180mm, with 11 holes at 6 mm per hole. What is the total free area?
180 * 6 * 11 = 11,880 mm3
11,880 / 100 = 118.8cm2
If manufacture instruction is unobtainable, what is the ventilation free area required for an appliance with 33kw gross heat input?
33 / 1.1 = 30kw net
Vent free area = 30kw * 5 = 15cm2
How much ventilation area will a DFE (Decorative fuel effect) appliance need at minimum?
100 cm2 regardless of the heat input.
* This value already had adventitious allowance taken in.
A living room in a new house contains an open flue ILFE fire of heat input 6.5kw net, what is the minimum vent area required?
6.5 x 5cm = 32.5cm2
(There’s no allowance for adventitious air in new-build property)
A kitchen in an unrenovated house built in 1989 contains an open flue boiler of 26kw net, what is the minimum vent area required?
(26-7) * 5 = 95cm2 vent required.
A room in an unrenovated house built in 1983 contains a DFE, what is the minimum vent area required?
100cm2 vent required as standard for DFEs.
A bedroom of unrenovated house built in 1983 contains an open flue gas fire of 6.6kw gross. What is the vent area required?
As the heat input is less than 7kw, no ventilation is required.
A room in an unrenovated pre-war house contains an open flue boiler of 72000BTU/h, what is the vent area required?
72000 / 3412 = 21.1 KW Gross
21.1 / 1.1 = 19.18 net.
Vent area = (19 - 7) * 5 = 60cm2
