chapter 5.2 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Recombination helps ensure
proper chromosome segregation during meiosis I
Syntenic genes
genes located on the same chromosome
genes close together are
We consider these pairs of genes “linked”.
Two genes with high recombination frequency are
further apart
Two genes with low recombination frequency
are closer together
Recombination frequencies can be used to
estimate the relative distance between 2 genes
How do you determine if 2 genes are linked?
the Chi Square test
Null hypothesis rejection means
genes are linked
Genes on different chromosomes will always
assort independently
Why don’t the recombination frequencies add up exactly?
Because of double cross over events
Formula for Rf
recombo/ total x 100
rf= mu=cM
: What is the order of 3 genes, A B and C?
First, calculate the RF between each pair of genes, then assemble into an order with the pair with the largest RF on the outside.
Genes that are closer together, will reflect a more accurate RF value, because
they minimize the chance of double cross over events
when mapping
Start with the genes that are closest together, since these will be the most accurate distances
