What is babbling?
Babbling of the typical 4-month-old baby is the most significant preverbal behavior and consist of simple vocal sounds and consonants-vowel combination.
Can be increased by social reinforcement.
Babbling and early speech-language production are closely related.
Morphemes
Are the smallest meaningful units of language.
Free morphemes
Can stand alone and convey meaning ex. Mom, stop, go
Bound morphemes
Prefixes and suffexes plus possesion added to a word. Ex: ing, s, re, es

Children with language disorder show a variety of problems like:
- limited skills in understanding spoken language
- limited understanding of word meanings and meanings in general
- poor listening skills
- limited expressive language skills
- limited use of of morphologic features or elements of language
- limited use of sentence structure
- inappropiate use of language
- difficient use of language that has been learned
- limited converstaional skills
- limited skills in narrorating expreinces
Semantic problems:
Children with language disorder
- aquire words and their meaning rather slowly
- show slow growth of vocabulary
- tend to learn only simpler, frequently used, and concrete words
- have difficulty understanding the meanings of spoken words
Sytantic problems are
Difficulties in sentence construction
Morphological problems:
Morphological aspects of language are ways in which worda are formed and modified to change the meaning.
Children with language disorders tend to speak without many morphological features (ex: plural s or past tense ed).
Pragmatic problems
Are those of social communication. A child with a language disorder might aquire some language structures but not use them appropiatley in social situations.
This include poor discourse skills, lack of turn taking, lack of topic maitnence, poor narrative skills, and etc.
Potential Causes and Associated Problems
Causes are not well understood. Booth genetic and enviormental causes are hypothesized
Genteic Factors
Genetics influence on specific language impairment is well documented
Familial prevalance of SLI is higher in children with language disorders than it is in the general population
Identical twin data also supports a genetic influence on SLI
Genetic syndrome
Are associated with language disorders of varying severity.
Enviormental factors
May be associated with language problems, potential causes of language disorder are social isolation, abuse, or neglect
Language Sampling
Is a procedure of recording a persons language production and converstional speech whenever possible.
