chapter 6 Flashcards
(16 cards)
memory
an active information processing system that receives, organises, stores and recovers information
first stage encoding
Information is converted into a useable form so that it can be processed by the brain
second stage: storage
retaining information over time
last stage: retrieval
accessing information that has previously been stored
sensory memory
Entry point of the memory Information that is not consciously aware of or able to manipulate
- unlimited capasity and lasts 0.3-4 seconds
echoic memory
- Receives incoming Auditory sensory memory
- Stores information for 3-4 seconds
- Important for understanding speech
iconic memory
- Receives incoming visual sensory information
- Stores info for approx .3 of a second
- Images last just long enough to recognise and process the information
short term memory
a memory store where information is consciously manipulated
capacity: 5-9 items
duration: 15-30 seconds
long term memory
a relatively permanent memory store where info can be stored and later be retrieved for future use
- possibly unlimited capacity and possibly permanent
explicit memory
information that can be consiously retrieved and stated (eg: known facts)
contains semantic memory and episodic memory
semantic memory
the declarative memory of facts or knowledge about the world
procedural memory
the memory of skills and actions that have been learned previously and can be demonstrated through performance
episodic memory
memory of specific events or personal experience
implicit memory
memory not requiring conscious retrieval
autobiographical memory
- Memory system based on a mixture of episodic and semantic memories
- Type of explicit LTM
episodic future thinking
projecting yourself forwards in time to pre-experience an event that might happen in your personal future
