Chapter 6 Flashcards
(39 cards)
When does collaboration occur?
It occurs when two or more people work together to achieve a common goal, result or product.
Which factors are critical to collaboration?
Communication Skills and Culture;
Communication System;
Content Management;
Workflow Control.
What is the workflow process?
A workflow is a process or procedure by which content is created, edited, used and disposed of.
Workflow process is very close to the concept of a business process. What is the difference?
The difference is that a business process focuses on delivering a good or a service externally to a customer, whereas a workflow focuses on delivering a good or service internally to other employees in the organization.
What is the “network externality” or a “network effect”
In general, the larger the number of people using a network, the more valuable that network becomes.
What is GPS?
Global Positioning System (GPS) uses a collection of dozens of satellites that orbit Earth and transmit precise microwave signals.
How can a GPS receiver calculate its position?
It can do that by measuring the distance between itself and several of the satellites.
What is Telecommunications?
The electronic transfer of data.
What counts as telecommunication?
Two people talking over the phone, two people using a workstation to send data to each other, two machines sending information to each other.
How does the transfer of electronic data occur?
It occurs through a communications media.
Which communication media are there?
Twisted Pair Copper;
Coaxial Cable;
Fiber Optic Cable;
Wireless Technology.
What ways to send data exist?
Two basic ways: Analog: continuously varying frequency, Digital: series of habits.
What is a computer network?
A computer network is a collection of computers that communicate with one another over transmission lines.
Which are the main types of networks?
Local are network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and internet and internets.
What are Protocols?
The procedures used to transfer information between machines.
What do Protocols do?
Protocols ensure that the data being sent by one machine, will be recognized by other machines receiving it. Both machines must agree on the protocol to use.
What is LAN and what is it distinguishing characteristic?
The local are network connects computers within a relatively small, single geographical location. The distinguishing characteristic is that it is in a single location.
What is WAN?
Wide area networks connects computers at different geographical locations.
What is the Internet?
An internet is a network of networks; it connects LANs, WANs and other internets.
What does LAN typically requires?
File server;
Print server;
Application server;
Network Interface Card. (NIC)
What is a switch?
A special purpose computer that receives and trans,its messages on the LAN.
What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)?
Hardware components that connects the device’s circuitry to the network cable.
What is a MAC address?
Media access control address is a unique identifier of NIC.
What is UTP?
Unshielded twisted pair cable.
