An ingredient that ensures that the paint will adhere to the surface. It is applied to the support

A surface on which the artist works, with a ground or primer
Encaustic Paint
Wax and resin mixed with pigments and burned in as a heat source passes over the surface.
Fresco Paint
Pigment mixed with water and a plaster support, usually a wall or ceiling that is damp.
Tempera Paint
An aqueous (water) medium like watercolor, with the durability of oil. Most famous emulsion is egg yolk.
Oil Paint
Pigment combined with oil, usually linseed.
Glazes
Send translucent veils of color applied over a thick layer of underpainting

Using a palette knife to paint.
