Chapter 6- Ionic compounds Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
What is a ion? How are the formed?
A
An ion is a positively charged atom. They are formed by the loss or gain of electrons.
2
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
Between metals and non-metals. Its the transfer of electrons.
For example NaCl
3
Q
What are the properties of ionic compounds?
A
The positively charged ions attract to the negatively changed. They are arranged in a three-dimensional structure, called an ionic lattice.
The electrostatic forces are strong and there are lots, because of this lots of energy is required to break them (high boiling point ect)
