Chapter 9- Electrolysis Flashcards
(8 cards)
Why must the compounds be in molten or aqueous for electrolysis to work?
Because normally the electrons are not free to move. But when its in molten or aqueous the electrons are free to move.
What is electrolysis?
Its is the breakdown/ decomposition of substances by passing an electric current through it.
What is electrolyte?
The substance that is being electrolysed.
What is the positive electrode called and what goes to it?
Anode- oxygen or non-metal.
Negative non-metal ions are attracted the anode, they loose electrons and are converted to atoms.
What is the negative electrode called and what goes to it?
Cathode- Metal or hydrogen.
Metal if it below hydrogen in the reactivity series.
Positive metal ions are attracted to the cathode, they gain electrons and are converted to atoms.
What needs to be considered when doing Electrolysis of an aqueous solution?
Water needs to be considered. Hydrogen and Oxygen will be given off.
What is 1 faraday equal to?
96500 coulombs OR 1 mol of electrons.
What is the equation linking quantity, current and time?
Quantity(coulombs)=current(amps) x time(s)
Q=It
