Motivation
The extent to which persistent effort is directed towards a goal
Characteristics of Motivation
Effort: How much
Persistent: How long
Direction: for what/quality:
Expectancy theory of motivation
Followers will be motivated if they think they are capable of performing their work, if they believe their efforts will result in a certain outcome
Expectancy
The probability that the performance effort can result in behavior/performance intended
Instrumentality
the probability that the performance will be followed by a particular outcome
Valence
the subjective value of outcome
Path-Goal Theory
is about how leaders motivate followers to accomplish designated goals. The stated goal of this leadership is to enhance follower performance and follower satisfaction by focusing on follower motivation
Major Components of path-goal theory
Leader Behaviors, follower characteristics, task characteristics
Directive leadership
leader who gives followers instruction about task, including what is expected of them, how it is to be done and timeline of when it is to be completed
Supportive leadership
leader who is friendly and approachable and attending to the well being and human needs of followers
Participative leadership
leader who invites followers to share in the decision making process
Achievement oriented leadership
leader who challenges followers to perform work at the highest level possible
Need for affiliation
a need to feel a sense of involvement and belonging with others
Preference for structure
A follower’s preference when a follower is dogmatic and authoritarian and have to work in uncertain situations
Internal locus of control
A follower’s belief that they are in charge of the events that occur in your life
External locus of control
A follower’s belief that chance, fate or outside forces determine life events
Obstacles
could be just about anything in the work setting that gets in the way of followers
