What is DEMOCRACY?
A system of government in which the people discuss an issue until they can all agree on one outcome.
What is GOVERNMENT?
The way people organize themselves to chose their leaders and make decisions.
What is REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY?
A form of government,citizens elect people to make decisions for them.
What is RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT?
In Canada a government (cabinet) that must answer to an elected representative.
What major concern did the maritime colonies have about the formation if union?
-They would be a minority in Canada and wouldn’t have much of a voice in decisions.
What are the 3 main factors that led the colonist to consider union?
- Political deadlock in the Province of Canada
- Shifting trade relations
- Defending British North America from the US
What is REPRESENTATIVE BY POPULATION (rep by pop)?
A system in which citizens elected members all represent the same number of people. The greater the population the more power a region has.
Who were the parties in the assembly?
- Clear Grit Party: Radical reformers who wanted more democratic gov.
- Les Rouges: Radical canadien separatists from Quebec
- Les Bleus: Conservative, for business Canadien, corporation with Anglaphones.
- The Liberal conservatives: wanted to coroner at with the French
- Independents: Representatives who we’re not part of a party.
What is FREE TRADE?
Tax free trade between countries
- It allowed Britain to sell there goods
What is IMPORT?
to bring goods in
What is Reciprocity ?
-Flow goods both ways across the border free of any import taxes
What are some Advantages of the Railway?
- Better transportation systems
- Goes far, goes from city to city, moves goods quickly and easily
What is Manifest Destiny?
-An American belief that the natural right of US is to control all of North America.
How was Canada’s capital city chosen?
Queen Victoria choose the capital city because people couldn’t decide where it should be.

What is significant about the ship Marco Polo?
Described as the fasted ship in the world, it was built in St.John.
Who was Joseph Howe?
- Leading politician in Nova Scotia during Confederation
- published a letter saying the government was stealing from them
- Didn’t want Nova Scotia to join Confederation
What are some disadvantages of joining Confederation?
Political: Loss of identity, Canadas have much larger populations
Economic: Could loose trade with the US
Military: Could be dragged into war with the rest of Canada
What are some advantages of joining Confederation?
Political: Would have some influence on Canada
Economic: Would open up markets and railways
Military: Could protect the maritimes from USA attack
Who were the 4 provinces to join Confederation why?
Canada East: Language, religion and school
Canada West: Political power
New Brunswick: Railway
Nova Scotia: Railway

P.E.I. : Was to small it would be swamped by other colonists. 1873
Newfoundland: Didn’t think they would influence in government. 1949
Where did the name CANADA come from?
From a Iroquois word kanata meaning village.

- married women couldn’t vote, very few single women could vote
- had to own property
- no minorities, First Nations, Métis, or Inuit could vote
- only 11% of citizens could vote
