Chapter 7 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the Law of Segregation?
Alleles separate during meiosis.
What is the Law of Independent Assortment?
Alleles from one locus sort independently from alleles at another locus
What is Recombination
Alleles sort into new combinations
Do linked genes assort independently?
No
What are Linked Genes?
Genes located close together on the same chromosome
What is a Linkage Group?
Genes located together on the same chromosome. They travel together through meiosis and arrive on the same gamete, and are not expected to assort independently
What are Nonrecombinant Gametes (parental gametes)?
Gametes that contain only the original combinations of alleles present in the parents
What are Nonrecombinant progenies?
Progeny that display the original combinations of traits present in the P generation
What does Complete Linkage lead too?
It leads to nonrecombinant gametes(parental) and nonrecombinant progeny.
What are Recombinant Gametes?
Gametes with new combinations of alleles
What are Recombinant Progenies?
Progeny with new combinations of trait formed from recombinant gametes.
What does Crossing-Over lead too?
Crossing over with linked genes leads to recombinant gametes and recombinant progeny (along with nonrecombinant)
