Chapter 7 Flashcards
Growth of IGOs
Rapid growth in the number of all types of IGO’s during this century, roles of IGO’s are expanding and taking on new global issues and functions
Functionalism
A “bottom-up” evolutionary approach. It starts with a narrow set of issues, that deal with cooperation in order to solve them. There is very little discussion related to sovereignty. There’s limited, pragmatic cooperation on these issues.
Reasons for growth of IGOs
o Increased international contact
o Increased global independence
o Expansion of transnational problems
o Failure of state-centered system to provide security
o Efforts of small states to gain strength through joint action
o Successful role models
European Union
Regional organization the hoped to move towards a fuller political and economic integration.
Created the Euro, which was adopted by most of the countries in the EU.
Certain citizenship standards are involved, a person can move freely between states in the EU without having to show ID.
United Nations
Most known, influential IGO.
An arena for states to voice their needs/struggles, basically a forum. Each state acts realist and pursues own self-interest.
Gives smaller countries the option to band together.
What is the future of IGO’s? How will it affect nationalism?
Substantial, deals with sociological and human rights
The UN has made progress, they are not always successful, but countries now use the UN as a means to pass resolutions (Ex. Inequitable trade situations).
IGO’s are only reliant on interdependence. Globalization has been increasing, it’s most likely that IGO’s will become more powerful.
