What is the difference between a manager and a leader?
A manager tends to control people by pushing them in the right direction. A leader is a person who can motivate others to accomplish the goal. Managers might have to motivate one person but a leader will usually motivate a group of people. People don’t have to follow a leader, but want too. Managers minimize risk and avoid the spotlight, while leaders are always in the spotlight and motivate people to take the risk.
What determines the success or failure of a leader?
Success or failure of a leader is determined by the actions of their followers.
How do leaders inspire their followers?
Their motivation, drive, how they talk and listen to people, their mannerisms, their intuition, and their overall personality that sets them apart and makes people follow them.
Why are leaders needed for animal facilities?
- There might be a monopoly today, but competition tomorrow.
- There is a constantly changing business environment.
- There is often a need to initiate change.
Structural Frame
Hierachral personnel structure with one “big boss” up top. Well defined work roles.
Human Resource Frame
Leader sees a need to better align the work of the organization with the needs of its employees. Puts emphasis on coaching and encouraging people.
Political Frame
Political needs, usually requires negotiations for budgets, or strong advocate for vision. Alliances are made and support worked towards.
Symbolic Frame
Using traditions and symbols of organization to aid in leadership efforts.
What are frames?
Strategies that a leader might use as point of views for different situations.
Positional Authority
Authority that goes with your job title.
Knowledge Authority
A leader who has respect of followers due to special knowledge or skills.
Coercive Authority
Type of authority that emanates from coercion. People require a reward from the leader, or they do not want to get a punishment from not obeying. Tyrant.
How do leaders lead?
By combining authority with leadership skills.
Motivation in leaders is expressed as:
They want to get the job done. They set goals and are motivated to reach that goal. They push themselves to succeed, and totally committed to fulfilling their vision. Their motivation is contagious and speeds.
Self Awareness in leaders is expressed as:
They are self confident, and assertive. They welcome feedback and criticism as being constructive. They welcome honest advice, collaboration from their team, and create a feeling of freedom and trust among their staff because they feel safe voicing feedback.
What is extroversion among leaders?
Displaying extroversion personality, even if neutral or introvert.
What is self-regulation among leaders?
They tend to look for solutions to problems, rather than looking for people to blame. They are level-headed.
What is empathy among leaders?
They can see a problem from another person’s point of view.
What is social skill among leaders?
They can communicate and network effectively. They build connections.
Why is networking important?
Networking helps leaders make decisions about future courses of action.
What is prudent paranoia?
A healthy personality trait for leaders, worry of ensuring things are happening correctly. Constructive suspicion.
