Chapter 7 Quiz Flashcards
(19 cards)
a well planned approach…
observer, analyze, correct.
6 steps to successful observation
1) determine objective of sports skill
2) note special characteristics of skill
3) study top-flight performers
4) divide skill into phases
5) divide each phase into key elements
6) understand why each element is performed as it is
Determine to objective of the sports skill (1)
analyze rules and conditions of said sport. most skills have more than one objective
discuss example (1)
primary objective is to throw it as far as possible. Secondary objective is to land in the sector and you cannot fall out of the ring.
special characteristics (2)
determine what enables the skill to be performed and how they are performed (non-repetitive vs repetitive. conditions under which athletes perform skills.
non-repetitive skill
discrete skill. there is a definite beginning and end. shooting a free throw for example.
non-repetitive skill in sequence
momentum generated on non-repetitive skill assists in beginning another non-repetitive skill. Triple jump for example.
repetitive skills
cyclic and repetitive in nature. one complete cycle leads into the next.
closed skill
precise and predictable. action of the opponent is irrelevant. typically no changes in weather conditions.
open skill
unpredictable environment. against opponent. uncertain weather conditions.
study top performances (3)
based on sound, sight, and feel. good technique. through analysis. provides a visual picture with speed, motion, timing, and body positions.
divide into phases (4)
make it easier to find errors. not watching too much.
phase
a connected group of movements that add together to equal the total sports skill. many skills can be broken down into four phases. each phase leads into/influences the next phase.
4 phases
1) preparatory movements and mental set
2) windup
3) force-producing movements
4) follow-through/recovery
windup
stretch muscles to optimal force-producing position.
force-producing movements
the specific actions that generate force.
follow-through/recovery
occurs immediately after the force-producing swing is completed.
Divide phases into key events (5)
distinct actions that join to make a phase. the skill is the building, the phases are the walls. key elements are bricks used to make the walls/phases.
understand mechanical reasons (6)
all actions are founded on mechanical principles.
