Chapter 7- The Circulatory System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Three main functions of the circulatory system
- Transport- for energy and remove waste
- Protect- protect body against disease
- Regulate, help regulator body temp
What are four things blood cells are made of
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What is plasma
Plasma is a bright yellow liquid made up of mostly water, dissolved substances, like oxygen and gluecose are carried around in plasma, plasma also carries waste away from the cells, such as carbon dioxide and urea
Red blood cells
Transport oxygen for respiration, contains a red pigment called haemoglobin
White blood cells
Protect the body for disease and function by fighting harmful micro-organisms like bacteria and viruses or by producing antibodies that kill them
Platelets
Platelets are tiny fragments of larger cells, they help the blood to clot
Arteries
Arteries carry blood away from the heart. They are thick to withstand the high pressure of blood pumped out of the heart
Veins
Veins carry blood to the heart and are thinner than arteries, they usually carry deoxygenated blood, which contain low levels of oxygen snd high levels for carbon dioxide
Capillaries
Capillaries are small blood vessels that link arteries and veins
The heart, what is it made of
The heart is made of a very strong cardiac muscle
What are the two sides of a heart seperated by
The septum
There are four chambers in the heart
Upper- left and right atria
Lower- left and right ventricles
They are separated by valves
Pulse
The pulse is a way of vibration that passes through an artery when blood is forced out of the heart
