chapter 8: Gas phase Flashcards
(21 cards)
What do we call the approximation model used to predict the behavior of a gas?
Ideal gas law.
What are the 2 rules for an ideal gas?
1) ideal gas molecules to not atttract or repel each other. they can only do elastic collision.
2) Individual gas molecules take up NO volume, gas as a whole can take up volume - not individual molecules.
Which equation can we use to approximate the moles of gas in space?
Ideal Gas Law:
PV = nRT
P = pressure
V = volume
n = # of moles
R = Gas constant (0.082 Latm/kmole) or 8.31 J/k*mol.
T = temperature in kelvin.
How can you convert from mole to # of molecules?
Mole x (6.02x10^23 mol/L) = Molecules
We multiply moles by avogadros number!
What is atmospheric pressure in Pa?
101300 Pa
What is atmospheric pressure in ATM?
1 atm
What is atmospheric pressure in kPa?
101.300 kPa
What is normal body temperature in farhenhiet?
98 Degrees F
What is normal body temperature in celsius?
38 C
What is normal body temperature in kelvin?
310 K
How can you convert from farhenhiet to celsius?
C = (F-32) x (5/9)
How can you convert from celsius to farhenhiet?
F = (C x 9/5) + 32
How can you convert between celsius and kelvin?
1 C = 273.15 K.
C + 273.15 = K
K - 273.15 = C
What is the freezing temperature of water in celsius, farhenhiet, and kelvin?
0 C
32 F
273.15 K
What is the boiling point of water in celsius, farhenhiet, and kelvin?
100 C
212 F
373.15 K
The air in a basketball has a pressure of 1.54 atm and the ball has a volume of 0.00706 m^3. Assume the temperature of the air inside the ball to be 25 degrees celsius. (gas constant = 8.32 J/K*Mol). What is the # of moles of air inside the ball?
a. 0.55 Moles
b. 0.44 Moles
c. 0.90 Moles
d. 0.67 Moles
0.44 Moles
How can you convert between atm and Pascals?
1 atm = 101300 Pa
atm x 101300 = Pa
Pa/101300 = atm
A sample of N2 gas takes up a volume of 2.5 L at a pressure of 1.20 atm and a temperature of 300 K. How many molecules of N2 are present?
a. 7 x 10^22 molecules
b. 9 x 10^23 molecules
c. 3 x 10^22 molecules
d 1 x 10^22 molecules.
7 x 10 ^22 molecules.
How much volume does 1 mole of gas take up at 273 K?
22.4 L
What volume does 1 mole of gas occupy?
22.4 L
A patient must recieve at least 2.5 moles of gas each minute ot maintain normal O2 saturation. An EMT’s BVM has a volume of 4 L. At a temp of 273 K, the EMT should squeeze the bag every:
a. 6 s.
b. 10 s.
c. 22 s.
d. 4 s.
d - 4 s
2.5 Mole x 22.4 L = 56 L per minute
56 L/4 L = 14 Squeezes per minute
60 s/14 = 4.28 s.
