chapter 8 - housing and its spatial distribution Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is housing
it is a structure or a building that shields people from the elements
what can housing be
unplanned/planned, temporary/permanent
what are high rise buildings
high rise buildings are buildings that accommodate more people, and are found nearer to the city centre. ex. apartments
what are low rise buildings
low rise buildings are buildings that accommodate less people, and are found nearer to the city fringe. ex. shophouses
what is housing shortage and how does it occur
housing shortage is a when there are too little houses. this happens when the population size grows faster than the development of houses.
what are some strategies to form sustainable housing, and what are they/ how do they help
IIE
Integrated land use planning is the process of allocating land for different uses, so as to meet the demands and needs of different groups of people to ensure sustainable development of a city. it requires the opinion of many stakeholders that come together to form the development, and may result in arguments due to the difference in opinion
Inclusive housing is housing that caters to the needs of different societies.
Environmental features help to reduce and sustain the environment from the damage we cause against it. They can also help in lowering long term prices, though they are expensive to install. ex, solar panels
what are the things needed for good housing
ABC
Amenities - they help make life easier for residents.
Basic services - WESS (Water , Electricity, Sanitation, Shelter)
Communal spaces - allow residents to interact with one another, thus fostering a community spirit
what are the two different types of housing?
formal and informal
where is informal housing located
LULU (locally unwanted land use)
why does informal housing exist
1) housing shortage
2) unaffordable housing prices for new migrants
factors that affect the price and location of housing
LPPH
land use planning - the process of strictly restricting different activities to different areas. housing usually is developed on areas allocated for housing development, whereas informal housing can happen anywhere, but usually near infrastructure as they can benefit from the services there (informal housing is not found in parks)
property developers - public developers, such as the government, make HDBs
private developers tend to pick more profitable land areas and cater to higher income families. they make more expensive housing
land prices - as the price of land increases, so does the price of housing. it could happen due to land shortage
housing financial scheme - lowers the price of housing for housing developers, thus motivating them to build housing and reduce housing shortage. areas without housing financial scheme tend to have less formal housing and more informal housing due to the low affordability of housing.
what causes housing prices to increase
1) shortage of land (land prices higher, housing price higher)
2) developers - private developers make more expensive housing
3) competition and depletion of natural resources - less resources means less things to build with means resources are more rare, causing prices to increase and thus, the housing (made with these resources) will increase
