chapter 9 - sustainable development of housing Flashcards
(10 cards)
what are the challenges does housing development pose to the people and their natural environment?
1) Competition and depletion of natural resources.
Water could be depleted due to the importing of food into the country and due to water stress and other impacts. Deforestation could occur as humans cut down trees to make things for themselves.
2) Environmental pollution. Environmental pollution is the introduction of substances which are unnatural into an environment, causing harm to plants, animals and humans. Water pollution could occur due to RSL: surface run off, untreated sewage and land pollution which seeps through the ground into groundwater, polluting the water. Air pollution could occur due to 1.the burning of fossil fuels 2. traffic congestion 3. factory emissions 4. burning of coal to generate electricity. this all causes exhaust fumes to be released into the atmosphere.
how do we improve slums?
1) by providing people in slums with construction materials and training. like this, they would be able to upgrade their homes
2) by providing those in slums with legal rights, so that they will be more motivated to invest in their homes and upgrade the community facility.
3) organised urbanisation - planning and modifying urban areas for newcomers
what is universal design?
the design of buildings, products and the environment in such a way that it is accessible to everyone
how do we sustainably manage housing?
- integrated land use planning
- inclusive housing
- environmental features
what is integrated land use planning?
allocating certain land areas for different uses so as to meet the demands and needs of different groups of people in order to ensure sustainable development in a city.
what is inclusive housing?
housing that has inclusive features - this means that they can cater to the needs of different groups of people
what does environmental features do?
- they sustain and reduce the damage we do on the environment
- they lower long time prices, but are expensive to install
ex. solar panels
what are things that make up good housing? elaborate on them.
- amenities - make life easier for residents, are useful and desirable features
- basic needs - WESS (water, electricity, sanitation, shelter)
- communal spaces - allows residents to interact, fostering a community spirit
what happens when we concentrate too many people in one particular area?
the concentration of their waste increases.
what are the things that humans need? (FOWES)
- Food
- Open spaces
- Water
- Electricity
- Space for waste disposal
