A

A 17-year old peasant women who appeared at the court of Charles VII, the uncrowned king of France in 1429. She told him that God sent her to save France and the desperate Charles authorized her to lead an army against the English. To Charles’s amazement, she led the French to several victories in a year. However, she was captured by allies of the English, and turned over to her enemies for trial. They tried her for witchcraft and after conviction, she was burned at the stake.
