Chapter One - Our Design World Flashcards
(20 cards)
what is market pull _____
development of new products in response to demand from users
phones - users want to talk to eachother
what is technology push _____
developments in matierials, components or manufacturing lead to new or improved products being developed
tablets & smart phones - developments in electrical component
what is a product life cycle, and the 4 stages it goes through
1 - stages a product goes through- intial ideas to disposal
2 - introduction, growth, maturity, decline
2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of global production
advantages :
large range of products all over the world - access to global markets
cost effeicient - cheaper for countries
disadvantages :
reduced jobs in our own society
workers in other countries payed too low - unethical
designers need to _____
consider the environmental impact, and the cultural implications of a product
what is the Consumer Rights Act
gives you compensation for goods which do not meet your standards
faulty
counterfeit goods
sustainablity is _____
meeting today’s needs without compromising the needs of future generations
how can new and emerging technlogies help us _____
1 -hyrbrid and electric cars
2 - developments in renewable energy
2 advantages of CAD
1 - reduction of time in the design process
2 - easier modifications of design
2 disadvantages of CAD
1 - powerful computers needed for 3D modelling and rendering
2 - high level of expertise to use correctly
How is CAM used
Produce products directly from CAD drawings
2 advantages of CAM
1 - CAM processes are generally faster than traditional manufacture
2 - high degree of manufacturing accuracy
2 disadvantages of CAM
1 - expensive
2 - regular maintenance and servicing
2 uses of CAM equipment
1 - Vinyl cutting
2 - 3D printing
What does the Ecolabel do?
Simplify consumer choice in seeking out products which are environmentally friendly
What does the Circular economy do?
Uses as few resources as possible, and extracts the maximum from them.
It is used, the product is recyclyed, and it is made again to be used.
Linear is the opposite, the dispose is the end.
What does fairtrade do?
1 - Sets up fairer trading conditions by connecting disadvantaged producers with consumers - improves their quality of life.
What is ecological footprint?
Area of Earth they need to produce resource to sustain their lifestyle / measure of the impact that human activity has on society
What is ecological deficit?
A measure which indicates that more natural resources are being used then can be replaced
Disadvantage of Renewable energies ( Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric , Geothermal)
Wind & solar - unreliable, small energy output
Wind - ugly
Hydroelectric - Expensive, floods countryside and upset natural habitats
Geothermal - Expensive, only profitable in some areas with hot rock near the surface
