Chapter Two - Smart Materials Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a smart material?
One that its physical or mechanical properties change due to their environment
What is electroluminescent material?
Provide visible light when exposed to an electrical current
What are Quantum tunnelling composites?
Materials which change from insulators to conductors when under pressure - when a force is applied it becomes conductive
What are Shape-memory alloys, and one example?
A shape that returns to its original shape once its heated
Nickel.
What is polymorph?
When heated in water, it becomes soft that can be molded.
What is micro-encapsulation?
Process of applying microscopic capsules to fibres or fabric - they can release substances
What is biomimicry?
Taking ideas from nature and mimiciking it.
What are composites?
A material manufactured from a combination of two materials with desirable properties.
Examples of composite materials
Carbon fibre - F1 cars
Glass reinforced plastics - boats, hockey sticks
Kevlar - police body armour
What are interactive textiles?
Fabrics that contain a device or circuit that responds and reacts with the user
What are phase-changing materials
Encapsulated droplets on fibres and materials that change between liquid and solid form within a temperature range.
What is aramid synthetic fibre and give an example?
Nomex, a non-flammabe heat resistant ribre stronger than Nylon
Nomex and Kevlar combined into a composite material for lightweight yet strong.
What are Geotextiles?
Textiles ascociated with soil and other aspects of construction, drainage and support, used in many Projects.
