A type of essay in which the writer adopts a impersonal, authoritative tone and models a highly organized structure.
Formal essay
A type of essay in which the writer adopts a friendly or conversational tone with the reader. This is also known as a personal essay.
Informal essay
A brief work of prose or fiction.
Short story
A sieges of events arranged to produce a definite sense of movement toward a specific goal.
Plot
The secondary plot within a piece of literature that accompanies the main plot yet is lesser in importance or significant.
Subplot
The part of the stories plot that introduces the reader to the setting, characters, and situation.
Exposition
The occurrence that sets the events of the conflict in motion.
Inciting incident
The events that lead up to the crisis of the story.
Rising action
The plots major turning point at which something happens that affects the outcome of the story and determines the future of the main character.
Crisis
The plots moment of highest emotional intensity.
Climax
The events that unfold the results of the crisis and lead to the conclusion.

The last element of the plot in which the major complications are explained or settled.

The perspective of angle in which a story is told.

The narrator tells his story in third person, and the storyteller he “knows all”.
Omniscient point of view
The narrator tells the story in third person but “gets inside” only one of the characters, usually the central character.
Limited omniscient point of view
The narrator, one of the stories characters, refers to himself as “I” through out the whole piece.
First person point of view
