General systems theory is applicable to many things, its the
foundation for family therapy
2 principles in the general systems are
hierarchies and boundaries.
If you have a systems outlook, you’re more concerned with
process than content.
If you have a systems outlook, you’re more concerned with process than content. You want to understand
what’s occurring, how it occurs, and when it occurs but NOT why it occurs.
Process vs content- process refers to
the interaction. So instead of the content, you’re looking at who talks to who, etc.
Reciprocal determinism
the individual, the environment, and the behavior all influence each other.
Enabled family system:
the family is able to balance the individual needs and family needs.
Disabled family system has
an imbalance
identified patient:
the family member with the presenting problem
Pluralistic view:
looking at something from multiple perspectives
A rule in a family often determines
someone’s role in the family
Family narratives and assumptions:
stories passed on through generations to explain the family.
Family reliance processes:
A belief system, a consistent and positive belief system. “We’re gonna get through this.”
The family’s organizational process.
How effectively is the family using its resources to absorb the shock.
Family communication and problem solving processes that are clear and consistent and congruent (congruent means ____)
your words and nonverbal communication match
3 things necessary for therapist resilience
Trust in self - have reverence for yourself and the self of others
Career development - keep educating yourself
Enjoy the practice of therapy - enjoy the job
Paradigm shift
a change in the overarching perspective through which we see everything
General systems theory
rather than focusing on intrapsychic, you have to view people as part of their system to understand
reciprocal determinism
Instead of A causes B, they both cause each other
Interactive patterns
Are developed by families to respond to internal and external stressors
Family resiliency
ability to thrive even when there’s stress
family stage markers and developmental tasks
Things that the family must accomplish so that it can move on to the next stage.
A family stage marker is a specific event that requires a change.
continuous vs discontinuous change
continuous is when the family is progressing on/growing. Discontinuous is when something specific happens and you have to stop and change things
vertical vs horizontal stressors
Vertical is things that are passed down through your family.
Horizontal is things that affect your immediate family from the outside.
