characteristic of living organisms- Topic 1 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does MRS GREN stand for?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
Why aren’t viruses considered living organisms?
Because they are not made of cells, need a host to reproduce, and cannot move without a host cell.
What is movement in living organisms?
Movement is the action of muscles or growth movement in response to stimuli like light in plants.
What is respiration in living organisms?
It is a chemical process that transfers energy from food; not the same as breathing.
What is sensitivity?
The ability to detect and respond to changes in the environment.
What is growth?
An increase in size and mass by increasing the number of cells.
What is reproduction?
The production of new organisms; can be sexual or asexual.
What is excretion?
The removal of waste products of metabolism, like CO₂ and urea.
What is nutrition?
Taking in food for energy and growth; plants photosynthesise, animals eat plants or other animals.
What is control in living organisms?
Maintaining internal conditions like temperature and blood sugar (homeostasis).
