characteristics of life Flashcards
(23 cards)
what are characteristics of life?
composed of cells, excrete waste, reproduces, has energy, grow and have a lifetime, and respond to stimuli
What is the cell theory?
- all organisms are composed of one or more cells
-All cells come from pre-existing cells - The cell is the basic unit of life
what are the kingdoms of life?
Archaea eubacteria (prokaryotes)
Prostista fungi plantae animelia (eukaryotes)
What is an organelle?
A specialized structure within a cell
What is a cell?
The basic structural and functional unit of living organisms
What is tissue?
Group of similar cells combine to perform a common function
What is an organ and organ system?
an organ is a combination of two or more different tissues perform a common function, and the system is a group of related organisms working together
What is the population?
A group of organisms of the same species, occupying a certain area and sharing a common gene pool
What is a community?
an as-semblance of species interacting with one another within the same environment
what is an ecosystem?
Biological community together with the associated abiotic environmental; characterized by a flow of energy and a cycling of inorganic nutrients
What is a biosphere?
A zone of air, land, and water, at the surface of the Earth, in which living organisms are found
what is the photosynthesis equation?
6CO2 + 6H2O —> 6O2 + C6H12O6
carbon dioxide + water —> oxygen+ glucose
where does photosynthesis occur in a eukaryote?
found in chloroplasts
where does photosynthesis occur in a prokaryote?
found in the cytoplasm
What is cellular respiration?
metabolism of food molecules in cells that generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
What is protein synthesis?
producing proteins from amino acids at ribosomes
What does yeast produce through fermentation?
ethyl, alcohol, using sugar ( anaerobic respiration)
what do animal cells produce when working anaerobically?
they produce lactic acid
what is an obligate aerobe?
Obligated to be aerobic (needs oxygen, eukaryotes)
what is an obligate anaerobe?
Obligated to be anaerobe (does not need oxygen, prokaryotes)
what is a faculative aerobe?
Normally function aerobically but can conduct anaerobic respiration in the absence of oxygen (ex. yeast/unicellular fungi, eucaryotic)
what is the equation for adenosine triphosphate?
exact same as photosynthesis but backwards the product also has 38 ATP
Where is the energy stored in an ATP bond?
The covalent bonds holding the outer two phosphate units contain a large amount of energy, enzymes break the bonds and energy is available to the cell
