Characteristics of life Flashcards
(17 cards)
Characteristic 1 and 2
Movement/Respond to their environment.
Characteristic 3 and 4
Growth and development/ Life span
Characteristic 5
They have a metabolism(they OBTAIN and use Energy).
Anabolic
Requires energy to grow and build-Synthesize LARGER molecules from smaller parts, using ATP as the energy source for these reactions.
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate: MOLECULE that carries energy within cells. MAIN ENERGY CURRENCY OF THE CELL
Catabolic
Uses energy to break down-BREAKING down LARGER molecules, such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins from ingested food, into their smaller parts.
Characteristic 6 and 7
They adapt and evolve/They reproduce
Characteristic 8
They maintain a BALANCE with the EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT.
Vasodilation;HOT
Widening of your blood vessels. Leads to an increase in blood flow through your blood vessels as well as a decrease in blood pressure.
Sweating;HOT
Sudorific glands secrete sweat which removes heat when water changes state.
Pilorelaxation;HOT HAIR
The flattening of hairs on the skin caused by the relaxation of piloerector muscles.
Stretching out;HOT SA
By opening up, the body has a larger SA.
Vasoconstriction;COLD
Reaction that DECREASES blood flow to the skin, which helps to minimize heat loss from the warm blood and therefore preserve a normal internal or “core” temperature.
Shivering;COLD
Rapid contraction and relaxing of skeletal muscles. HEAT PRODUCED BY RESPIRATION.
Piloerection;COLD HAIR
Contraction of the tiny arrectores pilorum muscles that elevate the hair follicles above the rest of the skin and move the hair vertically, so the hair seems to ‘STAND on end. ‘ GOOSEBUMPS
Curling up;COLD SA
Making yourself smaller, smaller SA. LESS TO KEEP WARM.
Characteristic 9 and 10
They contain hereditary information/Cellular organization
