Fundamental principles of phylogeny Flashcards
(8 cards)
Evolution
The scientific theory that describes changes in a species over time and their sacred ancestry.
Phylogeny
The study of the evolutionary relatedness between, and among species.
Phylogenic tree
A diagram depicting the evolutionary relationships between different species or groups.
Clade
A taxonomic group that includes a single common ancestor and all its descendants.
Homology
Similarity due to shared ancestry between a pair of structures or genes in different taxonomic groups.
Natural selection
Selection of species over others based on their reproductive fitness.
Artificial selection
Controlled selection of specific traits in organisms.
Meiosis
Process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells contains half the original amount of genetic information.
