Characteristics Of TRF Flashcards
Rainfall per year
2000mm
Store most of the nutrients where
Biomass - in the trees!
Then the soil, then litter due to fast decomposition
5 layers of the TRF
Emergents (50m), canopy (30m), understory(20m), shrub layer (5m), root mattress
5 plant adaptations
Buttress roots, drip tips, large surface areas, lianas, leguminous plants.
5 characteristics of the soil
No nutrients (leaching), very deep, roots only go down 10cm, acidic (decomposes release acids) and mostly sand
5 animal adaptations:
Live in the canopy (lots of food), camouflage (hide from predators, catch prey), nocturnal (save energy cooler), can swim(lots of flooding), excellent smell and hearing to make up for bad sight as it’s always dark.
4 main threats to the TRF
Cattle farming, commercial agriculture, commercial logging or land being cleared for mineral extraction, dams or new settlements.
Temperature
