The Witches

“Fair is foul and foul is fair.”

“Beware Macduff.”



“Is this a dagger I see before me?”

“Macbeth does murder sleep!”



“Lesser than Macbeth, and greater.” = He will not become king himself, but his descendants will.

“And often time to win us to our harms the instruments of darkness tell us truths” = The witches are using him to create chaos.


Lady Macbeth

“Out damned spot! Out, I say!” = this reflects her mental disorientation.

“Unsex me here!” = she doesn’t want to be a woman, she wants to lose her femininity. She wants to assist in the murder of king Duncan.

“Dashed the brains out.” = She would rather kill a child than break a promise to Macbeth.

“Too full o’ the milk of human-kindness” = the use of metaphor suggests that despite Macbeth’s bravery he also has a strong sense of compassion.



“O horror! Horror! Horror!”

“I must feel it like a man.”
