1
Q

What is the Earth’s crust also known as, and what are its characteristics?

A

The crust, also known as the lithosphere, is the uppermost layer of the Earth. It is the thinnest, least dense, and lightest layer.

Q

What is the mantle and what key processes occur there?

A

The mantle, also known as the asthenosphere, is largely composed of silicate rocks rich in iron and magnesium. It is semi-molten and has a temperature gradient that generates convection currents

Q

What is the outer core made of, and where is it located?

A

The outer core is composed of dense, semi-molten rocks containing iron and nickel alloys.

6
Q

What makes the inner core unique, and why is it solid?

A

The inner core is similar in composition to the outer core but is solid due to the extreme pressures it experiences

Q

What is the cores high temperature a result of?

A

its high temperature is due to primordial heat from the Earth’s formation and radiogenic heat from radioactive decay.

Q

What causes convection currents in the mantle?

A

Convection currents in the mantle are caused by the temperature gradient from the core to the surface. Heat from the inner core transfers through the mantle into the asthenosphere, causing hot magma to rise and cool magma to sink, creating a continuous loop.
