1640 Cumbernauld Band
Many radicals in Scotland believed that the alliance with the Covenanters had gone too far. 18 Scottish nobles, including Earl of Montrose, signed the Cumbernauld Band desiring to defend the King, showing divisions in Scotland. Charles accepted the abolition of bishops in Scotland.
1641 Scot’s stance on Wentworth
In response to Bedford’s bridging appointments, the Scot’s declared they would not make peace unless Bishops were removed from Scotland and Wentworth was dead.
1642 The ‘Incident’
Charles was linked to a royalist plot to kidnap radical Scottish Covenanter leaders, which ruined his chances of gaining support from the Scots.
