Chem 105 Chapter 6 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Describe the relationship between wavelength and frequency.
Indirect. As wavelength grows frequency goes down.
List the colors of the rainbow in order.
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
Describe the relationship between frequency and energy.
Direct. As frequency goes up energy goes up.
Describe the relationship between wavelength and energy.
Indirect. The shorter the wavelength the greater the energy.
Define Amplitude.
Height of the wave
Define Wavelength.
Length of the wave. Length from a point on a wave until the slope repeats.
Define Frequency.
Number of waves that pass a given point in a given amount of time.
Units: hertz, sec-1, cycles/seconds
What is the numerical value for the speed of light?
3x10^8
m/sec
What is the numerical value for planck’s constant?
6.26 X 10^-34
Joules • sec
Describe the principle quantum number.
Abbreviation: n
Tells which major energy level the electron resides in
1-7
What is the equation for the relationship between wavelength and frequency?
Wavelength(Frequency) = Speed of Light
State Hund’s Rule.
All sub-orbitals must except an electron before pairing can begin
Describe the azimuthal quantum number.
Abbreviation: l
Represents shape of orbital
Sphere(s): 0
Peanut-shaped(s):1
Dumbbell(d):2
Fundamental shape(f):3
Describe the magnetic quantum number.
Abbreviation : m
Which of the multiple sub-orbitals and electron resides in
- l … 0 … l
Describe the spin quantum number.
Refers two which one of the two electrons are in that sub orbital
+1/2
-1/2
State Pauli’s Exclusion Principle.
No two electrons in an atom can have the same set of quantum numbers
State Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle
It is impossible to determine both the position and velocity of an electron simultaneously
